Disco Illusion” (Lee at the Club on Halloween), 2023
As part of my reciprocal bond with my community, my artistic practice involves queering the art object. Echoing the visual vernacular of homosocial spaces, I transform my photographs through a variety of two-dimensional and sculptural processes. In this series, I make direct formal references to tinsel-like streamers often found in gay bars by printing my photos onto transparent film and cutting them by hand into quarter-inch strips. In an attempt to further tie these works back to the queer spaces they emerged from, I mount them to custom aluminum LED light frames that work in both fully lit and darkened exhibition spaces.
